Unpacking Unconscious Bias in Career Development

Overview:

This workshop delves into the subtle yet powerful influence of unconscious bias on career development. Participants will explore how biases can shape career trajectories, opportunities for advancement, and perceptions of potential within the workplace. Through engaging activities and discussions, participants will learn about the psychology behind unconscious bias, identify common types of biases, and explore strategies to manage and mitigate these biases to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment.

Key Objectives Covered:

  • Define Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the role they play in the workplace.
  • Foster understanding and identify what type of unconscious biases may exist in the field of career development.
  • Learn practical techniques to recognize and counteract unconscious biases and develop a more inclusive approach.
  • Take away strategies for mitigating bias in career counseling and decision-making.

Biography: Melenie Olfert

For several years, Melenie has worked as a consultant sharing her knowledge and expertise through leadership projects and workplace training. With a background in adult education and training, Melenie is now a published writer, as well as an accomplished speaker on workplace diversity, equity and inclusion, collaborative communication and leadership development.

Further to her training experience, Melenie teaches several courses with The University of Winnipeg’s PACE program. Her human resources background helps support the diversity of the Canadian workforce by bridging gaps and collaborating together for successful career and business growth.
